As the winter begins to loosen its hold on the area it’s time to take a step back and assess the damage that Mother Nature caused on your home. There are some easy ways to determine what needs to be taken care of before winter comes back around.
Take a good hard look (or better yet a feel) at the performance of your windows and doors. Put your hand along the edges and across the bottom of your entry doors. If you feel a dramatic decrease in temperature you may need to replace your weather stripping around your door or replace the entire door.
Take a walk around the interior of your house and look at the ceilings below a roof surface. Look for stains or damage to the drywall. Then take a look to see if there are missing shingles on the roof. There may also be a flashing issue against a side wall or around a ventilation product like a pipe or fan.
Next, take a walk around the outside of your house and look at the overall condition of your siding and gutters. Are there any missing pieces of siding, any pieces that have come apart or have fallen out of position and are at risk of being damaged? Are the gutters connected to the house securely? Are the downspouts connected to the gutter properly? Are there spots on the ground where the landscaping appears to be washed away to indicate water spilling over the gutters? This could be the result of a blockage in the gutters.
Now is the time to evaluate your home exterior so that you may avoid possible future issues.
