Volunteers Make the Difference at Pickering Manor: In recognition of National Volunteer Month

Posted

Sometimes it’s a simple moment—a quiet conversation, a shared memory, a familiar song, or the presence of someone who truly shows up—that can shift the entire day for a resident.

At Pickering Manor, volunteers are not just helping—they are part of the fabric of daily life. They bring presence, warmth, and genuine human connection to the community, often in ways that can’t be measured but are deeply felt.

April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize individuals who choose to give their time and energy to others. At Pickering Manor, this spirit is reflected in a wide range of meaningful volunteer opportunities, each rooted in connection.

Some volunteers spend time one-on-one with residents—listening, sharing stories, or simply being together. Others support group activities, creative programs, and special events that foster engagement and a sense of belonging.

Music continues to be a powerful bridge across generations. Local students regularly visit, creating moments of joy and connection between residents and the wider Newtown community.

Animals also play a special role. While certified therapy dogs are a valued part of the program, we also welcome friendly pets that are comfortable engaging with residents. These visits often bring comfort, spark memories, and create moments of unexpected joy.

“Volunteers help bring additional engagement, connection, and happiness to our residents,” said David Woodhead, CEO of Pickering Manor. “Their generosity truly reflects the caring spirit of our community.”

As Pickering Manor celebrates Volunteer Month, the community continues to welcome new volunteers into a program that is both flexible and meaningful.

Whether someone is looking to share time, offer a talent, or simply be present, there are many ways to be part of the community.

At Pickering Manor, volunteering is not just about giving—it is about building relationships, creating moments, and being part of something larger than oneself.
